Harlow celebrated the B'nei Mitzvah of its first ever set of triplets, David, Hannah and Nathan Brooks. A record congregation of about 180 people turned up to hear them read their portion, making it feel like a real community event. The parents, Ruth and Brian, are strong supporters of the synagogue and Ruth has taught in the religion school for a number of years. The children are quite at home there, having been regular visitors since babyhood when they formed the nucleus of the mother and toddler group.

A family living in Singapore returned to their roots when they celebrated their son’s Barmitzvah at Harlow Jewish Community. Sam Franks was born in Singapore, where he now lives with parents Debbie and Neil, older brother, Ben and sister Charlotte.
Sam’s grandparents, Ellen and Merton Long, were founder members of HJC more than 40 years ago and his mum grew up in Harlow before moving to Singapore 20 years ago.
Sam prepared for the ceremony and studied his portion by email, receiving regular electronic tutorials from HJC’s tutor, Anne Neuhaus.
His mother said: “We all came back to Harlow a few weeks before the barmitzvah and Sam had a few lessons with Harlow rabbi Irit Shillor, although he already knew his portion well by then. Many of our friends were also over here and we all really enjoyed the day.”

Harlow is a member of The Jewish Joint Burial Society.
