Tree of Life Project
Trees are a source of oxygen for every living creature and a source of wisdom, renewal and inspiration for artists and philosophers.
Harlow & Chelmsford Jewish Community has its own special tree mounted on an internal wall facing the Ark and the Ten Commandments. Presented to the community in 2001 by the Montlake family it has its own symbolism and importance. It’s a way to remember and celebrate both happy and sad events in our own lives.
The Tree of Life was designed by Deborah Montlake in three distinct parts:
- The inner, base layer is of oak. It is the widest, strongest layer and symbolises our solid, British base
- The middle layer is of gold. The branches spread the furthest and it is the only layer with roots, showing our roots are at the heart of Judaism and are the most precious element
- The outer layer is of copper. The branches in the shape of cupped hands represent our community and the security we experience within it. Copper conducts energy, just as the community conducts the energy of the congregation towards the heart of the religion
